Hofbrau - Original Lager Review

As lovers of craft brewing we’re always looking for that new thing and constantly seeking that first hop-high that hooked us. But sometimes the world of craft beer can get muddied and confusing, and we’ve all had a streak of two or three new beers that just weren’t to our liking.

That’s when it’s time to step back and try an original. And sometimes we have to do that literally by stepping back to Bavaria in the year 1589 to try Hofbrau’s Original Lager. The history here is no joke, especially when considering how young many of our craft brewers are, and the flavor is rich with tradition that starts in the soil.

Hofbrau’s Original starts with Pale Malt and Munich Malt, and is balanced by Herkules, Perle, and Select hops to create an ancient concoction sitting perfectly at 5.1% ABV and 24 IBU.

We’re huge fans of Oktoberfest and the beers that come with it, but let’s see how this lighter foundational beer treats us.

First Impressions:

  • On the Eyes--Light gold, clear, and topped with a cream-colored head.

  • On the Nose--Rich and malty with a spiced hop aroma. It smells very German, so we’re expecting rich maltiness, spiced hoppiness, and perfect balance.

  • On the Palate--Hofbrau’s Original is rich and malty with a full-body and a slightly spicy and floral hoppiness. The finish is dry with a mild lingering sweetness that fades quickly, proving its great balance. There’s a touch of creaminess to it that smooths out the slight roasted flavor coming from the Munich malt. It’s very approachable and even sessionable if you’re looking for a session.

Food Pairings: Hofbrau suggests pairing their Original Lager with German classics like sausages, cheese, roast pork, potatoes, and on down to salads, pasta, and steamed fish. But truthfully, an even-keeled lager goes well with everything… except maybe breakfast cereal—I haven’t tried that yet.

Final Thoughts:

A step back is essential in the world of food and beer. Honestly, I think craft beer loses itself in the theatrics sometimes.

Luckily, we have breweries like Hofbrau to center us again. Their Original Lager is rich, complex, balanced, sweet and spicy, full-bodied, and a must try for people who love beer. It can be enjoyed alone or in two or three Masskrugs at a time, and at any time of year. The tradition is deep, right down to the soil that feeds the malt and hops. It’s the perfect intro to European (and especially German) beer, and it’s just fun to drink. The only problem is that, being an import, it’s kinda expensive… but worth it., even if it’s only once.

Cheers!
