Cafe Du Monde Chicory Coffee

When you think about Chicory Coffee, you need to connect it to Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans. They are one of the most iconic purveyors of chicory coffee and have been open in the heart of the French Market since 1862 .

Chicory coffee is one type of coffee that has an extremely unique profile. It isn’t entirely like dark roast coffee, but still carries a hint of that familiar flavor.

Chicory coffee has a strong blend of earthy, coffee, and bitter flavors. The chicory root in the Cafe Du Monde blend is very strong (which I personally like) when compared to other blends that I have tried and carries the smokiness and heartiness of a dark roast.

The aroma and flavors blend well and give a sense of the root and roast.

In my opinion, chicory coffee is an acquired taste. The first time I tried it I was really unimpressed and thought the coffee was far too bitter. But after a few more hearty sips, I have grown to really love this coffee and enjoy the dark earthiness that it brings to my routine.

I have tried to give this coffee to my mother when she visits (who can drink about a pot of coffee a day!) and I still haven’t convinced her of this blend. Maybe 3rd time’s the charm?

If you are curious about trying Chicory Coffee, definitely pick up a can from Cafe Du Monde and brew it in a French press. I use my typical brewing measurements of: 6 tbs/~50 grams, 200-202 degree water, approx. 32 oz of water (yield about 24 oz).

Cheers,

Mrs. Brew
