October is an iconic month in many ways: unseasonably warm days lead into sweater weather, the world is covered by a wave of orange pumpkins, and pumpkin spice is added to almost anything we can think to add it to. This year, Mr. Brew and I decided to explore pumpkin spice in a new way and try Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Cold Brew. Let’s pour a glass and see how it measures up.
This concoction is a concentrate, meaning you need to add water to dilute it. We poured 4 oz of the cold brew and diluted it with 4 oz of water. As a cold brew, the expected strong and bitter notes come through, followed by a spice blend and only the slightest pumpkin flavor. The pumpkin adds a touch of creaminess, but overall this is a pretty thin, watery drink (which is a common trait of cold brews). The spice blend is a wonderful mix of cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, and clove that is punchy and bold.
Barista Note: We added milk and a little bit of sugar to pull out the sweeter aspects of the cold brew. The sugar definitely made the pumpkin more present and balanced well with the spices. Instead of milk, consider adding your favorite creamer (just make sure the flavors will mesh) to add creaminess and body.
Overall, not a bad cold brew if you are prepared for the bold flavors that are typical of cold brews. It is an easy way to bring some pumpkin spice (light on the pumpkin) to your home and an even better way to cool down and enjoy a cold one during the autumn heat.
Cheers,
Mrs. Brew
