Caddis Blend - Angler’s Coffee Review
Named after a popular fly fishing fly, the Caddis Blend by Angler’s Coffee is a blend of beans from Central America and Indonesia, intent on bringing a balance of complex flavors to your morning brew, whether you are fishing on the river or sitting on your back steps. Caddis Blend promises a malted chocolate flavor with nuttyness and caramelized sweetness. Let’s get to brewing and see how it measures up.
We brewed Caddis Blend in the French press to our usual specs: 37g grounds, 24 oz of 202℉ water, 4-5 minute steep time. The beans were quite dry, indicating a lighter roast (the harder and darker roasts will result in a more shiny bean as the heat extracts oils and pulls it to the surface). Right away we notice an active bloom – a testament to the fresh small batch roasting promised by Angler’s Coffee. There is an acidity in the aroma reminiscent of lemons, and some hints of milk chocolate.
Once pressed and poured, the lemon aroma lingers and is tasteable, followed by the milk chocolate. The promised malt flavors are missing on my palate (and we know our malt character here in the Brew house). There are some qualities of a medium roast, but Caddis Blend is on the lighter side of medium and has a light body. I do not notice a caramelized sweetness, rather a sweetness more aligned with citrus fruit and sugarcane.
Overall, this coffee is too light for my tastes as I prefer the darker, smokier, and more full bodied flavors. However, if you are a fan of lighter roasts and more acidic flavors, this might be right up your alley! Angler’s Coffee has created a blend designed to be enjoyed on the river which also makes me think of summer when lighter, brighter flavors are usually more desired. Caddis Blend might be just the brew you need to beat the heat and enjoy the summer months.
Cheers,
Mrs. Brew
