Off the Grid - Peet’s Coffee Review
We are back at it today with another one of Peet’s Coffee’s incredible line up – Off the Grid. This medium roast has a profile built to please, touting flavors of milk chocolate, almond butter, and pear. Now, I don’t usually associate pear with chocolate and nutty flavors, so let’s brew a cup and see what happens.
We brewed Off the Grid in the French press to our usual specs: 37g of grounds, 24oz of 200-202℉ water, steep 4 minutes. Right away there is an active bloom with a strong nuttyness and a subdued chocolate aroma. In flavors, the chocolate and almond are forward and balance each other well, resulting in a full-bodied creamy mouthfeel that is very satisfying. The pear is gentle, true to flavor, and offers a lingering reprieve at the end of the sip, coating the palate and adding a dry sweetness that keeps you coming back. In all honesty, if you aren’t actively searching for the pear, you won’t even notice it.
I’ll admit, I was leery of the pear. But I have grown very fond of this coffee and will happily recommend it as a medium roast. The beans are from Colombia and El Salvador and offer an innate depth of flavor and quality that allows the almond and chocolate flavors to shine in a sweeter way, and for the pear to swoop in at the finish.
Barista Note:
As it is summer time, we also brewed Off the Grid as a cold brew. We used the same quantities as our French press, poured cold water over the grounds, and steeped it in the fridge for 10 hours. Brewed in this method, the chocolate and almond flavors remained strong and the pear was even more hidden. The caffeine was strong(!) and we could both feel the energizing effects without any of the acidity that arises with hot brewed coffee. Off the Grid makes an excellent cold brew.
I have grown less fond of medium roasts over the years, especially ones that lean towards the light and fruity flavors that turn my stomach with a lingering acidity. But this restores my hopes in a medium roast! Off the Grid is balanced, creamy and full-bodied, with rich flavors that leave me satisfied. If you want something lighter that doesn’t compromise on quality or flavors and is great brewed hot or cold, give Off the Grid a try.
Cheers,
Mrs. Brew
