Grizzly Claw - Kicking Horse Coffee Review
It’s time to head to the Rocky Mountains and brew up the dark roasted Grizzly Claw from Kicking Horse Coffee. With a motto of “Wake Up, Kick Ass” and a profile promising a rich dark chocolate and decadent brew, we are expecting quite a punch from Grizzly Claw.
This dark roast has a very active bloom and a dominating earthy, grassy aroma. Once fully brewed, an herbiness comes through in flavor and is followed by a dry dark chocolate with hints of burnt sugar, making me think of a creme brulee. Grizzly Claw is very smooth, even custardy, and full bodied. The chocolate definitely is not a sweet flavor and takes on more of the earthy qualities of high percentage cocoa.
Overall, Grizzly Claw is more herbaceous than I care for, but if you like the earthier, grassier side of coffee, this is a good roast. It’s fresh, smooth, and the dark chocolate brings a nice bitterness. It is more on the expensive side, costing approximately $20 for only 10 oz. if you order off their website. (Some in-store prices were lower!)
Kicking Horse Coffee was recommended to us by someone who really enjoys their coffee, so while this one wasn’t our favorite we’ll definitely be trying different roasts to see if one is more aligned with the Brew house preferences.
Cheers,
Mrs. Brew
