Pinter - BrewDog Elvis Juice Review

Like many homebrewers we’re always looking for new ways and new equipment to take homebrewing to the next level. And if that level is easy, then Pinter is your unit. After aching for homebrewing over the summer we stumbled upon Pinter homebrewing system (Read an overview and review of Pinter below) and selected Elvis Juice as our first beer.

The kit (without Pinter) comes with a sanitizer pack, beer extract, yeast, and a hopper vial of hop oils to be added after fermentation. And if you have ten minutes, you can brew in the Pinter. Simply sanitize, add tap water, add beer extract, add yeast, shake, and put on the brewing dock for 10 days, add the hops via the hopper port, and let condition in the fridge for 6 days to finish the 6.5% ABV Grapefruit IPA.

Now, all of this information is provided on Pinter’s app, which makes it quite easy, and the overall yield is twelve pints, which stays fresh for 30 days. But let’s hope it tastes so good it won’t last that long.

First Impressions:

  • On the Eyes--Hazy and golden with a copper tinge and a cream-colored head that retains well and shines with hop oils.

  • On the Nose--Very citrusy with strong zesty and pithy notes of grapefruit and a hint of dried apricot.

  • On the Palate--A lot of grapefruit flavor with a peppery note that reminds me of Simcoe hops. It is medium-bodied, with a prominent lingering bitterness that gives way to a pleasant creaminess. The hop oils from the hopper are prominent, distinct, and fresh adding a clarity to the power of the hops and bringing the grapefruit flavor to the front. The finish is more juicy than dry with a nice effervescence that can be difficult to achieve in a homebrew, especially with bottle conditioning.

Final Thoughts:

Pinter’s collaboration with BrewDog couldn’t be easier to brew, and the final product is hoppy, fresh, bitter, and offers a gentle creaminess to balance it all out. But the question is: Would I brew it again?

Absolutely!

As far as homebrewing goes, it doesn’t get any easier, and the flavor rarely gets better. Since the process eliminates most opportunities for oxygen to get into the beer, the final product is hoppy and punchy with no off-flavors that can come with homebrewing. We in the Brew house are pleased with the final product, and we’re even more pleased Pinter gave us a chance to have some homebrewed beer in the fridge during the heat of summer.

Cheers!

Mr. Brew
