La Colombe Cold Brew Black - Review
Even though the calendar says summer is coming to a close, here in South Texas the heat is sure to linger for a little while yet. But any time of year, whether hot or cold outside, we all search for a chilled drink to refresh us and propel us into our day.
Enter: La Colombe’s Cold Brew Black. We have tried several of La Colombe’s canned coffees and recently brought home their unsweetened Cold Brew. From the first crack, I am greeted by a waft of rich, bold coffee aroma. It has a slightly smoky note to it and a hint of dark chocolate. I was eager to get tasting.
When I review a canned coffee, I always do a pour test to see how the coffee settles in the can because some split and are unpleasant. I am pleased to say, La Colombe’s Cold Brew looked as delicious as if I’d brewed it myself. (For the record, La Colombe has always passed the pour test!) The smoky note that was present in the aroma is also present in flavor, complemented by the chocolate and a touch of chicory for an earthy and bitter bite. The combination of gentle smoke and chicory pairs well with the chocolate for a true cold brew intensity, which to me means full body, full flavor, and no acidity.
Mr. Brew and I added a splash of milk and it added a really nice sweetness that subdued the sharper edge of the chicory notes and offered a gentle creaminess.
Be warned, this can of coffee has 220 mg of caffeine and is ready to pack a punch. The average 8 oz cup of coffee has approximately 95 mg, so this is especially ramped up. I could not drink one of these by myself and even though we shared it (we were well aware of how strong it would be) the effects of the caffeine were noticeable. If you are in need of a major caffeine boost, indulge. But if you have already had additional coffee today, just be warned that you will feel it.
I love finding ready-to-drink coffee that hasn’t lost the intensity of full body, full flavored coffee. La Colombe is a Brew house favorite, and Cold Brew Black is up at the top of our list.
