Oaxaca Reserve - Café Mexicano Review

french press pouring into a mug, next to bag of coffee

We recently came across the vibrant and alluring Cafe Mexicano coffees and shared our thoughts about Chiapas Reserve (we are big fans of Chiapas coffee). After such a great introduction to Cafe Mexicano's coffee, we brought home the Oaxaca Reserve, their signature dark roast coffee.

Oaxaca Reserve produces a mildly active bloom and has a pleasantly sweet and dark aroma (like sugarcane, cherries, and smoked wood). There is no lingering smoke aroma that is typical of dark and French roasted coffees. The flavors are well balanced with dark chocolate that leaves a slightly dry finish. The chocolate notes were less bitter than I originally anticipated and tasted closer to a milk chocolate than the intense dark I expected. There is a gentle sweetness that rounds out these mild flavors that is reminiscent of dark cherries but is not overly tart or acidic.

The dark qualities are all there: robust, dense, chocolatey. But there are none of the lesser appreciated dark qualities that can make coffee overly bitter or smoky. Instead, Oaxaca Reserve is well balanced and dark with mild sweetness and a full body.

I highly recommend trying out Oaxaca Reserve if you are looking to try darker roasts and less acidic coffees. It is a great guide to the dark side of coffee brewing with flavors that are more reminiscent of a medium roast. This can be easily enjoyed on a daily basis.

Cafe Mexicano is also a unique company to support as all their beans come from local farms in various Mexican regions. They are dedicated to showing off the diverse flavors of Mexico coffee and so far, we are 2 for 2.

Cheers,

Mrs. Brew
